Calder, James Erskine, 1808-1882

James Erskine Calder was born at Great Marlow in Buckinghamshire, England, on 10th June 1808. Educated at Sandhurst Military College, he failed to obtain a commission, but in 1829 he was appointed to the survey department of Tasmania. He was Surveyor-General of Tasmania from 1859 to 1870, and an authority on Tasmanian history. He died in Hobart on 20th February 1882. From the description of Letters, portrait [microform]. ca. 1962.
